Overnight in Hodson Bay

Athlone, situated right in the centre of Ireland, was the chosen venue for the first PRTV 'away' outing for many years, and 17 players teed up in dull conditions on Monday 27th June to test their skills over this tough golf course. Even though Athlone is one of the longest established Clubs in the country, the layout has been recently redesigned and presents a formidable challenge with its tree lined and undulating fairways, not to mention picturesque Lough Ree lying in wait for errant approach shots to the Index 1 16th hole.
As the early afternoon rain disappeared towards Dublin, we set about plotting our way around the ancient Esker Riada while enjoying the views over the lough and surrounding countryside. Habitual prizewinner Pat Courtney coped best with the challenge to win with 34pts but this was not really a day for prizes. Everyone adjourned to the nearby Hodson Bay Hotel for dinner followed by a few well earned 'shandies', vowing to return to Athlone in greater numbers next year. Many thanks to Captain Pat O'Donovan for organising this extra outing and to everyone who supported this very enjoyable initiative.

Next Outing: Woodbrook
