'Rea' of sunshine at Portmarnock

The first real competitive outing of the 2011 season took place on Monday at the famous Portmarnock Golf Club. The day itself was ideal for playing golf, cool with sunshine but more importantly, no wind to speak of. These benign conditions offered a perfect opportunity to 'tame' the hallowed Links, where so many of the world's golfing greats had competed with distinction, and whose achievements were evident on plaques and pictures throughout the Clubhouse. Some of us began well but flattered to decieve, others finished with a flourish after early round struggles, while the rest just started badly and then faded.
The golf course is undergoing some remedial works at present and although the greens were lightly sanded they were still treacherous, and getting the ball into the hole was just as difficult as ever. With a starting time of 8.30, the first groups began with high hopes of setting a winning target, but the early birds had to forgo the worm on this occasion because Peter Rea (9), playing in the final group, brought in a score of 38pts to win by 3pts from Captain Pat O'Donovan.
The Society is pleased to welcome another 2 new members, Gerry Hayes and Phil Mullaly, and we trust they will enjoy a long and happy association with the Press, Radio & TV.
