Ray
runs away with Captain's Prize
Having served his time with the Society
'Bunnies', Ray Maguire gave notice that he is ready to make the move
to the next level by winning Pat Courtney's Captain's Prize at sun-drenched
Powerscourt on Monday 15th August by a staggering 5 stableford points.
The tussle for the minor places was far more competitive, with Vice
Captain Michael Collins, back in the groove after illness, getting
the better of the player in form, Peter Rea, by just a single point.
The 'East' at stately Powerscourt is always a great test of golf and
proved so once again. Scoring for most was difficult to say the least,
but with the course in super condition, coupled with some of the most
scenic backdrops we have yet encountered, it didn't seem to matter
all that much. Adding to the excitement, Tom McGrane lasered his 5
iron tee shot at the 13th straight into the hole. Tom didn't actually
see the ball finding the cup and by all accounts neither did his playing
partners, as they were convinced it was in the back bunker, so imagine
the elation when they checked the hole. Regardless of whether it was
mere serendipity or an act of immense skill, Tom walked off the green
with his first ever ace, 5 added points, and a giant step towards
winning Class 2.
Captain Pat gave us an insight into what an enjoyable year he is having
as Captain and thanked members and guests for a very memorable occasion.
Michael Silke once again came up trumps with the magnificent array
of prizes and we thank Powerscourt for their excellent hospitality.
