Michael 'carpes' the Captain's diem at Howth.
The trend nowadays in golf's majors is the creation of so called signature groupings, hoping they act as the springboard to ultimate victory, but alas do not always achieve the desired outcome. At Howth on Monday 11th June,
the Press Radio and TV Society's first Major of the year was held, and a randomly chosen group containing the 3 players with the best scores from last year's Captain's Day, actually did return the winner. Signature or otherwise, Michael Farrell improved on his 2017 runner-up finish, firing 3 birdies to win Myles Cronan's Captain's Prize with a fine score of 36pts. Second place went to Peter Rea on 33pts, while Pat O'Donovan secured 3rd spot once again, a further point back.
Given the sustained period of dry and sunny weather, it is nothing short of genius that the golf course looked and played so well, true testimony indeed to the skill of the dedicated greenkeepers.
The traditional Captain's Dinner in the well appointed clubhouse was certainly worthy of the occasion, so full marks to the catering staff. The large number of attendees from Howth G.C. and the PRTV was reflective of the high esteem in which he is held and Captain Myles is to be applauded for organising such a fantastic day with the magnificent array of prizes.
Howth is not a regular stop on the PRTV calendar, but surely this challenging but interesting layout, boasting such unrivaled views and welcoming hospitality
, will merit another visit.
