Eddie
wins 'Stanley Bergin' again
The Battle of Clontarf in 1014 is regarded as a major event in Irish
history. The Stanley Bergin Trophy, first introduced in 1969 and played
for each year subsequently, is now a 'major' in the PRTV Society calendar.
One thousand years after Brian Boru lost his head while freeing his
people from the grip of the Vikings, Eddie Hearns reigned supreme
on
the compact tree lined battlefield that is Clontarf Golf Club
in the 2014 version
by keeping his head down and keeping his head, defeating another name
synonymous with Irish freedom, Michael Collins, and a second Brian,
not Boru but Kelly, by just a single point. The trophy was presented
to the winner by Brian Bergin, an esteemed member of Clontarf and
son of the late Stanley. Our thanks go to the Bergin family for joining
us on the day and to everyone at the Club for making us feel so welcome.
We look forward
eagerly to returning next year when the completed development works
will pose an even greater challenge.
