The perigee
moon witnesses the rise of a new star
Because the moon orbits the
Earth in an oval shape, sometimes it is closer to our planet than
at other times. When the moon is closest to Earth it is described
by astronomers as being in the perigee stage, whereas when
it is further away, this is the moon’s apogee.
At the European Club on Tuesday 15th November, Anne Marie Kearney
was the brightest star, when her stellar score of 35 points was good
enough to win the Lakelands Trophy, and the second of the Christmas
Hampers, by a light year from the 3 wise men, Michael Collins, Charlie
Doran and Brian Kelly. A closer look at the scoring might suggest
that, unlike the moon, some players were still in the apogee stage.
On a balmy and benign day of which golfers usually only dream, just
four players reached the 30 point mark, proving once again the serious
challenge posed by the magnificent European Club Links. Greens and
course were in superb condition and a tribute to great grounds keeping.
Reaching the green was indeed a relieving experience, only to be offset
by the trickery of those grassy carpets. On the plus side, a great
day for hunting lost balls, of which there were quite a few.
Plenty to talk about both during and after golf and dining (great
food and service), ‘trumped’ only by the trophy prize
presentation presided over by our Captain Elect, Michael Collins.
Our new star, Anne Marie, summed it up best – “the best
golf course in Ireland!”
