Des
tames the wind at The European Club
Will it be wet? Will it be windy?
Those questions were being deliberated by the early starters in the
superb European Club on Thursday 15th November as they tucked into
their excellent early morning repasts.
The general consensus was that it probably would not rain but it might
be breezy.
What a breeze! Blowing with twenty knot gusto from the south/south
east, it covered the fifteenth fairway with foam from the waves hitting
the beachside cliffs and sent a salt mist further inland to blind
the spectacles wearing golfer.
Nevertheless, the leaders on the Golfer of the Year list
remained undaunted; Des Long claiming the Lakelands Trophy with a
well engineered score of 29 points, while Peter Rea was only two points
further back. It should make the GOY fight one to savour at The Royal
Dublin on December 17.
A few wind adverse players of the twenty-two starters opted for early
retirement after nine, but all finishers claimed to have enjoyed the
experience! An experience enhanced no doubt by the Ruddy hospitality,
together with the good humour of Eddie and the catering staff.
The course, as usual, was in great playing
order, but conditions turned ball retention into an art form, with
the 'balls lost' count being higher than recorded scores on some cards.
Ah, the challenge that is the European Club!
