President's Surprise for Jerry
The significance of number '31' manifested itself at Grange Golf Club on Monday 15th June as Jerry Hayes emerged victorious when the sun had set on this year's President's Prize outing.
Incredibly it is 31 years since our Society last played this famous course, and with greens only too willing to punish any putt not struck with the utmost confidence, the winning score on a day just about ideal for golf was a modest 31pts. There was no one more surprised than Jerry when he learned that he was the winner, with just a single but vital point to spare over Dermot O'Grady, Brendan O'Farrell and Peter Kennedy. President Ian was his usual ebullient self and his after dinner speech did not disappoint. His welcome for the visiting Captain of Arbroath Golf Club, Iain Forgrieve (notwithstanding the previous weekend's soccer result), and for his special guests and good friends Harry Lennon and Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, was laden with warmth, and was duly reciprocated in the post speech ovation. Grange is a tough examination of one's golfing skills and a glance thru the results will confirm that we all have work to do before hopefully sitting the test again next year.
Many thanks to the greenkeepers and catering staff for looking after us so well, and to Society and Grange member Michael Collins for his assistance in organising such a memorable day out.
