2016
Season Opener at Malahide
The traditional opening to our golfing season
took place in brilliant winter sunshine at
Malahide G.C. on Monday 22nd February. The fine weather saw quite
a few members taking to the fairways in an attempt to remove any cobwebs
from their swings but it was the usual suspects who were to the fore
when all the scores were revealed.
Brendan O'Farrell from just down the road returned 31pts, which proved
to be the the best score of the day and just sufficient to edge out
Martin Clancy by 1, with Denis Foley and Peter Rea a further point
adrift.
At the Annual General meeting which followed the golf, Pat Courtney
was installed as Captain for 2016, with Michael Collins named as Vice
Captain. Ian Corr continues as our esteemed President, Paul McCarthy
continues as Hon. Secretary, John Foley as Hon.Treasurer, Michael
Farrell as Hon.H/Cap Secretary and the outgoing Captain Brian Moran
is Ex Officio. The remaining Committee positions are filled by Eddie
Hearns, Paddy Higgins, Dave Green and Tom McGrane.
Kevin and Noreen McKenna, Eddie Staunton, Enda McDermott, Eddie O'Keeffe,
and
Michael Silke were approved as Special Friends of the Society.
Some changes to our h/capping system were also approved, mainly that
the h/cap reduction for an overall win will now be 2 shots instead
of 3, but will remain at 3 for our 'Majors' i.e. President's Prize,
Captain's Prize and Christmas Hamper/Brendan McKenna Memorial. Starting
h/caps for most members will be their current GUI/ILGU h/cap. The
exceptions will be those who won Hampers at Royal Dublin whose h/caps
will be reduced by 2 for the overall winner and by 1 for the mini-hampers,
and non-GUI/ILGU members who will continue to use the h/caps with
which they ended 2015.
The draw for this year's Matchplay will be made at Portmarnock and
h/caps on that day will be carried for the duration of the competition.
If you cannot make it to Portmarnock and wish to be included in the
draw, please contact either Brian Moran or Michael Farrell.
