Myles takes second at Mullingar.
The town of the left-handed mill again played host to our away outing on Monday 6th October. Mullingar Golf Club looked magnificent in the calm after Sunday night’s storm. Hardly a breath of air, sunshine for most of the afternoon, and not a single left-handed player in sight. James Joyce, who occasionally visited Mullingar in his youth and mentioned it twelve times in Ulysses, would certainly have been moved to wax lyrical again had he seen the golf course on Monday.
A smaller group than usual – a mere baker’s dozen – set out to tame the course and achieved some limited success. Falling leaves proved a bit of a problem for the more wayward player (not me, boss!) by covering the little errant white Titleists.
John Foley, Myles Cronan and Eugene Murray evaded the pitfalls and returned decent scores to earn their places at the top. John also had the audacity (and of course the skill) to also scoop the 'Nearest the Pin' prize with a distance of twenty feet and two inches. Only one name appeared on that sheet which meant that the fifteenth hole avoided some damaging pitch marks.
An excellent evening in the Bloomfield House hotel finished off a great day and our thanks to John O’Sullivan who put in all the organisational work once again.
