Another Christmas win for Brendan
The Brendan McKenna trophy, awarded to the winner of the PRTV Christmas outing, is back in familiar hands for the coming year following Brendan O'Farrell's countback victory over local member and Society Captain Paddy Higgins on Monday 15th December at the Royal Dublin Golf Club. Brendan had previously captured this coveted piece of silverware in 2011, coincidentally on a countback, playing off the same handicap, and with the same score as this year - 37pts. Noreen and Kevin McKenna were on hand to present the trophy to the popular winner and in his acceptance speech, Brendan spoke fondly of what their late father meant to him and to the PRTV Society.
The Jubilee Matchplay reached its conclusion when Des Long outsmarted Michael Dunphy, winning 4 and 3, and having built an unassailable lead at the European Club, Peter Rea further strengthened his hold on the Golfer of the Year trophy with another high finish.
The day was just about perfect for golf with a slight breeze blowing down the course, aiding the golfers on the outward half but just strong enough to ask a few questions of the field on the return journey. The links was in superb condition and the greens were a joy to putt on. Well done to the greenkeeping staff for their great work.
For many, the golf is only the prelude to the real reason for being at Royal Dublin in December, namely the much anticipated Christmas Dinner & Cabaret. The meal certainly lived up to expectation, while Ronan, Aonghus and Eddie were once more on top form with musical items interspersed with some great anicdotes, as the night flew by far too quickly.
Now we look forward to the visit of the man in the big red suit and another great golfing year in 2015, which will hopefully see us at Royal Dublin again for next year's finale.
