Happy Christmas for Peter at Royal Dublin
On a wet and breezy Monday 14th Dec. at The Royal Dublin Golf Club, Peter Rae made light of the damp conditions to win this year's Christmas Outing on a countback from Charlie Doran. While the conditions were not ideal for golfing, the majority battled on to the finish in the hope of having their name inscribed on the Brendan McKenna trophy, and spurning the opportunity of an early exit at the back of the 14th. A handful of not so hardy (i.e. wise) souls did bale out here and sought the welcome sanctuary of the Clubhouse, and in the circumstances, who could blame them.
The Matchplay final was a keenly contested affair with the issue in doubt right to the final hole. Although both contestants fell foul of the infamous Garden, Pat Courtney's one hole advantage after 17 was enough to see him home victorious over a gallant Michael Dunphy. This was Pat's third win in the last 4 years, a remarkable record indeed, so well done Pat and commiserations Michael, also beaten in last year's final, no doubt your time will come. Our Golfer of the Year is Des Long. With 2 overall and 3 Class wins this year, and high finishes in most of the other outings, Des was a worthy winner, and ended the year playing off a h/cap 9 shots lower than his starting h/cap.
The annual Christmas Dinner and Cabaret brought another successful year to a close, as regular entertainers Aonghus, Eddie and Ronan, ably assisted by special guests Dave and Sean, regaled us to the witching hour. We thank our sponsors for their continued support, the catering staff for another tasty meal and Royal Dublin for their hospitality once again.
Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
