Victory for Eddie at Royal Dublin
Having opened the golfing year with an overall win at Portmarnock, Eddie Hearns closed it in similar fashion on Monday 12th December to win the Brendan McKenna memorial trophy and Christmas hamper at Royal Dublin. Eddie's 36pts saw him finish 2 ahead of Aidan Butler, Mick Daly and Peter Rea and he could not contain his delight as he received the cup from Noreen and Kevin.
In fairly gloomy but nonetheless benign conditions, the descending fog threatened to spoil the day, but thankfully it remained on the periphery of the golf course and everyone was able to complete the round. Also meriting a mention was Eugene Murray's Hole-in-One at the 7th hole, the second ace recorded at Society outings this year following that of Tom McGrane at Powerscourt on Captain's Day.
With the Matchplay title already secured, coupled with great consistency at every outing throughout the year, Des Long had no difficulty retaining his position as Golfer of the Year, and as he did last year, finished this campaign 8 shots lower than his starting h/cap.
As is customary, the Christmas Dinner and Cabaret brought the curtain down on another great year for the Society. Aonghus, Eddie and Ronan were top of the bill once again, with Sean Keating giving another virtuoso performance on clarinet, while Paul McCarthy showed his dexterity on drums when called upon. Many thanks to Royal Dublin for their hospitality and to the catering staff for looking after us so well.
Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year to all our members and friends.
