Michael
captures final 'Major' at Royal Dublin
One might be excused for thinking that the golfing gods had fallen
out of love with the Press Radio and TV Golf Society, given the scarcity
of competitions since the Captain's Day at the end of August. Thankfully,
we seemed to have returned to favour on Monday 16th December for the
final major of 2019, the season ending Christmas outing and cabaret.
On a cool and bright morning, a sizeable field assembled at The Royal
Dublin Golf Club to do annual battle for the Brendan McKenna Memorial
Trophy, and when the sums were completed, Michael Farrell emerged
victorious by the narrowest of margins from Joe Sheridan. Michael's
35pts was enough to secure the hamper and get his name on the trophy
while Joe on 34pts was 3 better than local man Enda McDermott back
in third.
This year's Golfer of the Year competition was won yet again by Des
Long, and in a fitting tribute Des dedicated this victory to our dearly
departed friend Peter Rea, last year's winner. Des had earlier emerged
victorious in the keenly contested Matchplay final, seeing off the
challenge of Tom Fleming at the 17th, which was sufficient to push
him to the summit of the GOY table.
At the now traditional dinner and cabaret, Captain Eddie expressed
gratitude to everyone at The Royal Dublin for another memorable occasion
and in reply, Club Captain Dermot Curtin thanked the PRTV for their
long association with the Club and hoped that it would continue for
many more years.
The musical trio of Aonghus, Eddie and Ronan were in sparkling form
after dinner, and augmented by clarinet virtuoso Sean Keating, the
'Fiddler on the Roof' Dave Green and percussionist and now with added
vocals, Paul McCarthy, sent everyone into the night air with a song
in their hearts.
A great way to draw the curtains on another successful
season.
