The 'Greening' of the Royal County

County Meath Golf Club once again hosted Ian Corr’s Presidents prize and proved once more that only the best could match its wiles.
The weather gods proceeded to intermittently bombard the heroes of the sward with bouts of heavy thunder showers and some hail before teasing the innocents with glimmers of sunshine. And they did it more than once, which meant that various groups could be seen diligently searching for golf balls in some very small areas under some very large trees! Despite the weather the course was in fine fettle as usual, and the tricky greens were not slow to sort out the men from the boys.
Dave Green led the pack with a superb 38 points closely followed, only one behind, by Pat Bernard. A new face on the podium was Barney Keville, who could be one to watch in the future!
The president hosted an excellent banquet. He was joined by the President of the RTE Golf Society, Mick Chaney.
Prior to the presentation of prizes, the President, in usual loquacious form, gave his State of the Society address which was warmly received by a captive audience. He emphasised our long-standing relationship with Co. Meath GC. He praised the contribution that the late Brendan McKenna had made to the Society in running it almost single handed! He thanked the Committee and Secretary, Paul McCarthy, for continuing on that success. His suggestion that he had spent too long in office was treated with derision by his audience, some of whom thought it was a subtle mid-term call for re-election!
The draw for the singles Matchplay was announced. Sixteen of the top twenty competitors are participating.
The President’s selection of prizes was excellent as one can glean from the happy faces in the presentation pictures.
For the rest of us there is always next year.
