President's Day at Co.Meath
For many years now, the first 'Major' on the PRTV Society calendar has been played in May at the Co.Meath Golf Club, and so it was again this year on Monday 13th when Ian Corr's President's Prize was eagerly contested. The weather god must still have a score to settle with the President because, although the day began with sunshine, it was punctuated with thundery rain showers at regular intervals, thus adding to the difficulty of making a winning score. The course stood up well to the onslaught, as did Pat O'Donovan, who returned a super score of 38pts playing off 7 to win the top prize from Peter Kennedy on 36pts and Charlie Doran a further 2pts adrift in 3rd.
The highlight of the apres golf on President's Day is undoubtedly the after-dinner speech, and again Ian did not disappoint. Having now retired from playing golf, his theme this year was one of reminiscence, recalling days spent in rounds of strenuous idleness with dear friends, 3 of whom are sadly no longer with us, all left-handers like himself, but who will have to wait a long while yet before he joins them for a fourball. His philosophy for enjoyment of golf is derived, not from how well he played - and he must have been a good player to maintain a single figure h/cap - but from the company of those with whom he played regularly. The good news is that he is still actively chasing the small white ball thru the medium of pitch-and-putt and we all wish him many more years as 'the aristocrat amongst the peasants'.

The greenkeepers at Co.Meath deserve praise for the standard of their course presentation and the quality of the greens. Also deserving a special 'thank you' are the catering staff for the excellent meal put before us, and I doubt if anyone would disagree with the President's assertion that our love affair with the Golf Club is due as much to the delicious food
as to the challenging
course.
