Rain stopped play.
Stanley Bergin would have appreciated that.

In the competition for his memorial trophy at County Meath on Tuesday 5th May, play was stopped, but just for those who, on Monday night, had eyes only for the lovely weather presenter rather than the weather map behind her. They should have seen that the front would clear northwards in the morning and so it did. While the plains of Meath were certainly drowned by the deluge of the bank holiday weekend, the course was playable with placing everywhere, while the greens were completely unaffected.
The smallest field of the season enjoyed an improving day with no rain and sun eventually breaking through to warm the backs of even the silliest of mid-offs! No silliness in the scoring though.
Pat Malone, who has been bubbling under all year, clinched the Stanley Bergin Trophy with a magnificent 40 points. Pat played in the last group so Des Long, who had achieved 37 points much earlier in the day, had the long clubhouse wait to be relegated to Cl.1 winner, while John Foley followed with 35. Good golfers can surface regardless of handicap!!
We were given an effusive welcome by the Lady Captain of County Meath, Ms. Ger Geoghegan, who looked forward to seeing us again next year. It was no less than the welcome accorded to us by the club staff, and our Captain expressed the gratitude of the PRTV to County Meath for their hospitality and their regard for our society.
On a day when most courses were closed, it was a tribute to the ground staff of County Meath that they presented a course that withstood the elements and stumped quite a number of our players. A worthy venue indeed for the Stanley Bergin Trophy.
