Stanley Bergin hat trick for John.
..............................
The first silverware of the year was on offer at County Meath Golf
Club on Tuesday 3rd May, where the Stanley Bergin
Memorial Trophy was keenly contested. Having bridged a 38 year gap by winning the trophy for a second time in 2013, John Foley ensured there would be a much smaller interval this time when his score of 35pts was sufficient to bring up the hat trick in 2016. Chasing him all the way to the finish were Charlie Doran, Des Long and Kevin McKenna all with 34pts, just a missed putt or wayward approach from possible victory.
Despite poor weather in the days leading up to the outing, the course was in good playing condition, and although the day was somewhat breezy, long spells of sunshine made for a very pleasant few hours chasing the small white (or yellow) ball.
The catering was first class and the Pro Shop staff most obliging as per usual. For many years, the Stanley Bergin Memorial outing was synonymous with Delgany G.C., but most would agree that it has now found a welcome and worthy new home in Trim and we look forward to returning to this tranquil but testing venue for many more years.
