Brendan
wins 'by a proverbial innings'
The
County Meath Golf Club insignia “NULLAE HIC INSIDIAE TALES”
from Virgil’s Aeneid, as all you Latin scholars will know, translates
as “there is no such plot”.
In winning the Stanley Bergin Memorial Trophy one man certainly didn't
lose the plot. Brendan O’Farrell, playing off 9, slammed the
field with a magnificent 40pts - in cricketing terms, a maiden over
with six boundaries.
Paddy O’Connor followed with a well batted 35pts and was trailed
by Aidan Butler on 32pts. The remainder of the field were much further
adrift – a telling tribute to the state of the course, which
was in tip-top condition, and the pin placements which amplified the
trickiness of the greens. And, by the way, we played off the yellow
tees which lengthened the course beyond the usual society setup.
A beautiful sunny day, organised no doubt by the old High Kings of
Ireland who reside in nearby Tara, was enjoyed by a smaller than anticipated
turnout which did not really do justice to the day or the venue.
Although the dawn chorus persisted throughout the day, the only bird
sightings were a scurrying wagtail and a couple of industrious crows
creating employment for the greenkeepers by overturning divots in
the hope of finding a tasty morsel.
Speaking of which, tasty morsels were in plentiful supply in the Clubhouse,
where superb catering and welcoming friendly people made for a great
day.
Those who could not make it certainly missed some right regal golf
in the Royal
County on the 2nd day of May.
