Woodbrook win for Jerry
Early birds invariably catch the very best worms and so it proved on our annual outing to Woodbrook Golf Club, where the rough was tough and the greens were excellent. Not so the weather which, unlike last year, varied from pleasant sunshine in the morning to persistent thundershowers in the afternoon.
The earliest bird was Jerry Hayes who set the benchmark at 37 points and wormed his way to a clear cut victory. Pat Courtney was also an early riser and took class honours as a result. John Foley managed to weather the storm to cement his position in Class 1.
But all others, including winners, struggled in the Irish summer conditions and failed to manage a course which years ago brought many a famous golfer to his knees.
A few of the older, wiser and later golfers felt they had done quite enough by the fourteenth and fifteenth hole and decided to call it a day. This group included our very wise Captain who still pulled a nines prize with a fine 18 points. He was effusive in his thanks to Woodbrook and even more so in his appreciation of their food fare!
But nevertheless we all went home happy!
